This explains the ancient legend that it was in this place that Nino of Cappadocia placed the Holy Cross, which marked the adoption of Christianity by Georgia. Later, a temple was built over the cross, which was called the Temple of the Holy Cross. It is noteworthy that first of all the temple of the Small Jvari was built (preserved in ruins at the main temple), and only then the Big Jvari was erected to preserve the relics of the Holy Cross.
